Stress Wave Meter
Non destructive stress wave velocity measurements have been used by
CAI for the inspection of wood structural members for over 15 years. This
equipment is used to measure velocity time of travel in a structural
member. Velocity measurements that differ substantially from the theoretical
are evidence of possible deterioration.
Full Scale Load Testing of Roof and Floor Trusses
Full scale load testing of structural framing members such as roof and
floor trusses have been completed by CAI testing in a load test facility
(rack) or by application of construction materials weights such as concrete
block shingles or sand. Various test protocal procedures can be developed
in accordance with applicable standards and based on respective framing
systems.
Steel Sill Tie Foundation Plates
Wood foundation connectors securing the sill plate to foundation are
manufactured by a number of manufacturers. CAI has tested these for
submission and evaluation by major building code research groups.
Steel
Joist Hangers
CAI has conducted testing for manufacturers to determine values for
submission to major building code research groups.
Load Testing of Prefabricated Stairs
Manufactured stairs of non-stress grade material frequently require
certification by full scale load tests. CAI has performed these tests
INSITU and at manufacturing facilities.
Specific Gravity (SG) testing of Structural
Lumber
Removal of wood samples from stress grade lumber for specific gravity
testing. Samples are marked, matched and cut from thelumber, weighed
and dried in a laboratory oven and re-weighed to calculate specific
gravity (OD/OD). These tests are performed in order to assign actual
known SG values to connectors to be tested
Composite Wood Joist Testing
Testing of Com-Ply wood joist fabricated with same dimensional sizes
as standard dimension lumber. Inner core consists of OSB. Top and bottom
is laminated with pieces of laminated veneer lumber
Kor-Joist Testing
Testing of joist constructed of 3 pieces of dimension lumber joined
with a proprietary assembler which clamps the members in place and fastens
them.
Wood I-Beam Testing
Tests were performed on wood beams and joists fabricated in an I-Beam
configuration. All members are constructed with dimension lumber.
Testing of Wood Truss Plates
CAI has provided testing of wood truss plate connectors for a
number of truss plate manufactuers in accordance with ANSI/TPI standards
for testing.
Load Testing conventional Floor Joists Modified
for increased stiffness
Conventional floor joist testing to determine deflection and
transient floor vibration characteristics. Floor response was recorded
with a seismograph and typical methods to excite floor prior to loading.
Testing FRT Treated Truss Web Members
Where deterioration and/or strength loss of some fire retardent treated
wood truss web members is suspected truss web members can be tested
in-place with the CAI web member tester.
Screw Withdrawal Tests
CAI testing of FRT plywood. Plywood estimated strength loss can be evaluated
by the use of screw withdrawal tests made at the site and comparing
test values with known values of untreated material.
FRT Plywood Prood Load Testing
FRT plywood w/suspected reduced values can also be evaluated in the
filed w/ CAI proof load testing device. ( (This is an alternate method
to the screw withdrawal testing). The equipment consists of a load cell
supported by a simple beam anchored to framing members below (trusses
or joists). A maximum load of 400# is applied.
Lumber and Timber Moisture Recording
Moisture content of lumber and timbers can be evaluated by CAI in the
field with an electric resistance moisture meter. Insulated longer pins
are used to penetrate lar timbers.
